Making a grand entrance.
The entranceway to a deck from the street is often neglected. Consider creating a “grand entrance” and incorporate similar design features as the deck itself.
Balancing benches into your design.
Benches can be a great idea for one deck, and a bad idea for another. Consider factors such as visibility, location and clutter before incorporating benching into your design.
Try to avoid the box deck.
Many contractors will suggest them because they can be constructed quickly, but they lack creative appeal. By simply cutting a corner and angling the deck boards, you can beautify even the simplest deck.
Avoid using frail lattice as skirting material.
One errant kick of a soccer ball or strike from a lawnmower and it’s finished. Consider using 1×6 skirting instead. It looks great and keeps the animals out.
Stairs with storage.
A staircase from an upper level deck can take up a lot of room. Consider utilizing that space with a built-in storage shed.
Privately perfect.
Privacy screens are a great way to provide privacy without giving you the feeling of being too enclosed. Consider square lattice work instead of the common diagonal.
